Day One of the 2014 Wilbur-Ellis SunDome Shootout saw 9 overtime sessions spread among only 3 games. So things went rather late here at the Yakima Valley SunDome last night. It started “friendly” enough when the Toledo Indians faced the Overlake owls and their twin towers, 6’9″ sophomore Owen Friend and 6’7″ senior Charlie Friend. The game went into overtime and after only one session the Owls were 3 points better than the Indians 63-60. The two Friends combined for 30 of Overlake’s points, Forrest Wallace had 21 for Toledo.
When Cedar Park Christian and Castle Rock faced off it showed to be a low scoring affair, tied at 39 at the end of regulation. These two ended up playing an extra 20 minutes, that’s 5 overtime sessions! Castle Rock was celebrating a victory after the 2nd session or was it the 3rd, heck it all runs together now! They had hit a long shot at the buzzer, trailing by 2 at the time. But as the officials met they ruled it was a two point basket sending them into another overtime. Finally in the 5th overtime the Eagles outscored the Rockets 14-7, ending the longest game in tournament history 76-69!
In the late game on Friday Squalicum and Prairie needed only 3 overtime sessions to decide their contest. This made a thrilling 61-58 Storm victory seem anti-climatic, needing only 3 extra sessions!
